An interactive system for recovering information designed for [among others] the domestic user.

To access large-volume information ..., microcomputers will be linked to centralised computer databases. Viewdata systems ... are the first examples of such databases.... In such systems the ordinary television set is adapted to display pages of information retrieved over telecommunication lines to which the television set has been linked by microcircuitry.

Subscribers can gain access to the information by means of a special terminal or through a television or personal computer connected to a telephone line.

The system offers, for example, meteorological information, train timetables, or news. In addition, the user can send messages, order products or transfer money.

Videotext is the generic term for systems which retrieve and display text information on modified televisions: viewdata (e.g. the British Telecom Prestel) is one method. An alternative method is Teletext (e.g. BBC'S Ceefax) in which pages are broadcast on otherwise unused television lines.

Videotext service requiring a coaxial cable.

This service, offered by Southern Satellite Systems, uses the vertical Blanking interval of Atlanta "Superstation" Channel 17 (WTBS) to carry the Reuters News Service. Decoders are united to cable operators who, in turn, select the information pages they wish to display on their cable news channels. The viewer at home has no selection capability. (TYTEL, 1982, p. 42-50)

The equipment used to provide the SSS Cable Text service is based on British defined format teletext technology in general and the Mullord integrated circuits in particular. An early adaptation of this technology to North American television standards was accomplished. (VICE-1, 1981, p. 79)
