The north westerlies of summer force humid air to rise against the western mountains, causing heavy rain in the west ... As the air sinks down on the eastern side of the mountains, it warms and the clouds quite often disperse. This is called the foehn effect and in summer it brings a hot, dry and very trying wind for a while to the Canterbury Plains inland of Christchurch. Then the wind becomes a southerly and for the rest of the year it brings cooler fresher air.

L'air se déplaçant dans le flux d'alizé et rencontrant une île monte en suivant le relief. Ce phénomène d'ascendance (provoquée) génère un refroidissement de la masse d'air, la condensation de l'eau contenue dans cette masse d'air, l'apparition de nuages et de précipitations, [...] En redescendant sur le versant sous le vent, ces masses d'air, qui ont perdu leur eau à cause des précipitations (engendrées), se retrouvent à un état d'humidité inférieur à l'état initial, et provoquent donc un effet de sécheresse sur les régions touchées. Cet effet très fréquent est nommé «Effet de Föhn ou Foehn» (et prononcé «feunn»), du nom d'un vent [chaud et sec] soufflant de l'Adriatique sur l'Autriche. Il apparaît dès qu'un vent humide rencontre une barrière montagneuse.

Mountain ranges have some very interesting weather patterns. One of these amazing phenomenons is the valley wind. Valley winds originate on south facing slopes in the northern hemisphere, and north-facing slopes in the southern hemisphere. When the face of the mountain and surrounding air is heated, the density of the air decreases. This results in the air rising to the top of the slope. During night, the process is reversed, and the air turns into a down slope wind. These winds can be quite powerful.

At night air cooled on the mountain slopes flows down into the valley displacing bottom air which rises and completes the cycle. Downslope or katabatic winds are usually moderate in strength.
