OBS

It occurs most frequently in spring, when it may bring bright sunny weather, and is also common in winter when it may bring snow. It can cause harmful frosts in spring.

OBS

Le «foehn» ou, du suisse allemand, «föhn», est un vent chaud et sec qui se développe par l'affaissement de l'air après le passage d'un relief. Habituellement, le vent se développe du côté sud de la montagne où il provoque nébulosité et pluies puis, traversant vers le nord où l'atmosphère devient parfaitement claire mais l'air lourd, desséché et chaud, fait grimper la température de 10 °C pendant le jour alors qu'il gèle la nuit. Ces soudaines modifications entraînent la fonte des neiges et expliquent de nombreuses avalanches.

Simoom ... is the Arabic name for the local whirlwinds associated with small "thermal lows" ..., common in summer and spring in Arabic and the Sahara. It is associated with very high temperatures (130°F); the name means "poison wind", due to the incidence of heat stroke that is associated with it.

Dry, dust-laden wind, which blows from the desert in Egypt and over the Red Sea.

OBS

It is generally southerly or southeasterly, occurring in front of depressions moving eastward across North Africa or the southeastern Mediterranean. The deep khamsins occur in spring with depressions traveling east-northeast across the northern Sahara. They are preceded by a heat wave lasting about three days and are followed by a duststorm. The passage of the depression is marked by a cold front bringing Mediterranean air and a sudden drop in temperature.

The north westerlies of summer force humid air to rise against the western mountains, causing heavy rain in the west ... As the air sinks down on the eastern side of the mountains, it warms and the clouds quite often disperse. This is called the foehn effect and in summer it brings a hot, dry and very trying wind for a while to the Canterbury Plains inland of Christchurch. Then the wind becomes a southerly and for the rest of the year it brings cooler fresher air.

L'air se déplaçant dans le flux d'alizé et rencontrant une île monte en suivant le relief. Ce phénomène d'ascendance (provoquée) génère un refroidissement de la masse d'air, la condensation de l'eau contenue dans cette masse d'air, l'apparition de nuages et de précipitations, [...] En redescendant sur le versant sous le vent, ces masses d'air, qui ont perdu leur eau à cause des précipitations (engendrées), se retrouvent à un état d'humidité inférieur à l'état initial, et provoquent donc un effet de sécheresse sur les régions touchées. Cet effet très fréquent est nommé «Effet de Föhn ou Foehn» (et prononcé «feunn»), du nom d'un vent [chaud et sec] soufflant de l'Adriatique sur l'Autriche. Il apparaît dès qu'un vent humide rencontre une barrière montagneuse.
