Le terme «sécurité alimentaire et nutritionnelle» est une autre manière de combiner les notions de sécurité alimentaire et de sécurité nutritionnelle. Son utilisation s'est répandue ces dernières années et les communautés spécialisées dans la santé publique et la nutrition, en particulier, l'ont préconisé afin de souligner la nécessité d'intégrer plus étroitement la nutrition dans les politiques et programmes de sécurité alimentaire. Il est privilégié par ceux qui souhaitent mettre en avant l'ensemble des liens existant entre la sécurité alimentaire et la sécurité nutritionnelle, non seulement sur le plan linguistique, mais aussi sur le plan conceptuel, en particulier au niveau des ménages et des individus.
