The number of degrees per second a particular aircraft can turn.

The turn indicator indicates the rate of the turn, not the amount of the turn. Thus, a standard rate, or rate one, turn will give a rate of turn of 3 degrees per second, or 360 degrees in two minutes. The instrument is usually calibrated to indicate a rate one turn when the turn needle is centred on one of the indexes seen either sides of the centre index.

The turn coordinator is really two instruments. The gyro portion shows the aircraft's rate of turn - how fast it's changing direction. A ball in a tube called the "inclinometer" or "slip/skid indicator" shows the quality of the turn - whether the turn is "coordinated."

L'un d'eux, l'indicateur de virage (plus communément appelé «l'aiguille») est un gyromètre qui mesure le taux de virage autour de l'axe vertical. L'autre, l'indicateur de glissade (généralement appelé «la bille») est un simple système pendulaire qui sert principalement à indiquer si le virage est coordonné (c'est-à-dire si l'angle d'inclinaison correspond à la vitesse vraie et au taux de virage), et sinon à indiquer l'amplitude de la glissade ou du dérapage.

OBS

Certains parlent d'indicateur de virage tout court puisque celui-ci est forcément jumelé à un niveau transversal. En traduction, mieux vaut ne pas trop sous-entendre, car il pourrait très bien arriver des situations où l'instrument et un de ses éléments constitutifs portent le même nom («l'indicateur de virage comprend l'indicateur de virage proprement dit et un niveau transversal [...]»).

Turn and slip indicator. The instrument is composed of two components. The turn needle is an electrically driven gyroscope which indicates the rate of turn. The marks (often called the doghouse) on either side of center represents a bank angle of 15 degrees. ... The glass level containing the black ball is called the inclinometer. It provides the pilot with a measure of the turn quality. During both straight and level flight and during turns the ball should stay centered. The turn and slip indicator acts as a partial backup to the attitude indicator in that it shows rate of turn.
