OBS

Le nom H5N1 fait référence à deux sous-types d'antigènes présents à la surface du virus : l'hémagglutinine de type 5, et la neuraminidase de type 1. Chez les oiseaux, il existe 15 sous-types de virus grippal mais seul les sous-types H5 et H7 sont pathogènes.

Avian influenza viruses do not normally infect species other than birds and pigs. The first documented infection of humans with an avian influenza virus occurred in Hong Kong in 1997, when the H5N1 strain caused severe respiratory disease in 18 humans, of whom 6 died. The infection of humans coincided with an epidemic of highly pathogenic avian influenza, caused by the same strain, in Hong Kong's poultry population.

Different circulating influenza A viruses are identified by referring to two signature proteins on their surfaces. One is hemagglutinin (HA), which has at least 15 known variants, or subtypes. Another is neurominidase (NA), which has nine subtypes. Exposure to these proteins produces distinctive antibodies in a host, [...].
