La palabra cookie (galleta en inglés) hace referencia a unos pequeños archivos de texto que se alojan en el disco duro al visitar ciertas páginas web. Estos archivos contienen información que permite identificar al internauta que vuelve a una página, por lo que resultan muy útiles para no tener que introducir de nuevo nombres de usuario, contraseñas o preferencias como el idioma.

El control para detectar a usuarios únicos se suele hacer por IP [protocolo Internet] o, más habitualmente, mediante cookies. Es decir, en el caso de Google Analytics, cuando un usuario accede a una web se guarda un fichero(cookie) en su ordenador. Si al cabo del tiempo, vuelve a entrar en esta misma página, el sistema detecta la cookie y no lo contabiliza como usuario único(aunque sí como visita).

cookie: El uso del español adoptó sin modificaciones el término inglés "cookie" a pesar de haberse propuesto diferentes equivalentes que no se arraigaron en el uso, entre los que se cuentan algunos que siguen literalmente el inglés, como "galletita" o "buñuelo", y los que hacen hincapié en la función, tales como "espía" y "fisgón".

Whenever a request is made to the server from a given IP address (site), the amount of time since a previous request by the same address is calculated (if any). If the time difference is greater than a preconfigured visit timeout value (or has never made a request before), it is considered a new visit, and this total is incremented (both for the site, and the IP address). The timeout value is set to 30 minutes, so if a user visits your site at 1:00 pm in the afternoon, and then returns at 3:00 pm, two visits would be registered. Technically due to the limitation of the HTTP protocol, log rotations and other factors, this number should not be taken as absolutely accurate, rather, it should be considered a pretty close "guess."
