OBS

The West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) is the segment of the continental ice sheet that covers West (or Lesser) Antarctica, the portion of Antarctica west of the Transantarctic Mountains. The WAIS is classified as a marine-based ice sheet, meaning that its bed lies well below sea level and its edges flow into floating ice shelves. The WAIS is bounded by the Ross Ice Shelf, the Ronne Ice Shelf, and outlet glaciers that drain into the Amundsen Sea.

Un autre développement, encore expérimental, se prépare aux États-Unis, celui des serveurs d'information à vaste zone (WAIS - Wide-Area Information Server). Il vise à interconnecter des sources multiples, aussi bien des serveurs spécialisés que des réseaux locaux, à l'aide d'un protocole capable de collationner, collecter et intégrer les informations et de les véhiculer sur un réseau national à très grande capacité. L'objectif est de permettre à l'usager de formuler directement ses questions et d'ouvrir des dossiers dynamiques, qui seront automatiquement tenus à jour par abonnement.

WAIS : en français, on voit surtout l'abréviation qui se prononce «ouéce».
