Les principales familles d'insectes xylophages sont les bostrychidés, les anobiidés, les lymexylonidés, les cérambycidés, les buprestidés, parmi les coléoptères; les siricidés, parmi les hyménoptères les cossidés et les sésiidés (aegériidés), parmi les lépidoptères; enfin les termintidés. Ces insectes causent un préjudice important aux arbres, soit en dévorant les pousses terminales, soit en creusant de très nombreuses galeries qui provoquent une déperdition de sève et entraînent la mort du sujet.
