El maíz reventón es una forma extrema de maíz duro con endosperma duro que ocupa la mayor parte del grano y una pequeña cantidad de almidón blando en la parte basal del mismo. Los granos son pequeños, con pericarpio grueso y varían en su forma de redondos a oblongos. Cuando se calienta el grano, revienta y el endospermo sale. Varias formas primitivas de maíz tienen granos de tipo reventón. El uso principal del maíz reventón es para bocadillos (rositas o palomitas).
