Du point de vue géodynamique, l'ensemble des plaques océaniques et continentales forme la lithosphère dont l'épaisseur varie de 50 à 150 kilomètres. Cette couche est séparée d'une couche plus profonde, appelée asthénosphère, par une zone de transition, la «zone de faible vitesse». Dans cette zone, les ondes sismiques sont atténuées.
