De façon spécifique, on utilise le terme «amiante», «amiante chrysotile», ou encore «amiante blanc», lorsqu'on veut préciser qu'il s'agit de chrysotile [cette famille minéralogique représente la majeure partie de l'amiante industriel]; si l'on veut préciser qu'il s'agit de l'une des cinq variétés d'amphiboles, on utilise alors le terme «asbeste», ou encore «amiante amphibolique», le terme «amiante bleu» étant réservé à la seule variété de crocidolite.
