Dentro del término general de discapacidad auditiva se suele distinguir entre tres trastornos que permiten describir mejor las casuísticas habituales, y cuyo conocimiento resulta fundamental para el logopeda: Hipoacusia: cuando la audición es deficiente, pero permanece cierta capacidad que es útil para la percepción del lenguaje oral y de los sonidos ambientales. Sordera: existe una audición residual imperceptible, que imposibilita la percepción del lenguaje oral y de los sonidos ambientales. Cofosis o anacusia: es una ausencia total de audición.
