Use of chemicals to reduce evapotranspiration - chemical antitranspiration and antievaporation can be used to reduce water loss and increase water yield. The chemicals may close the stomata, form a film over the stomata, or coal the leaf with a reflecting coat.

Sur le sol, on peut utiliser des substances qui augmentent son albédo de façon à diminuer l'énergie absorbée et donc l'évaporation. Sur l'eau, on utilise des films monomoléculaires relativement imperméables qui flottent à la surface de l'eau. Malheureusement, ces films sont sensibles à l'action du vent et donc peu durables. L'utilisation de films plastiques est très efficace sur l'eau ou sur le sol, mais ce procédé est onéreux.
