À l'origine, une API - ou un jeu d'API - est une couche logicielle au travers de laquelle une application peut accéder de façon standardisée aux ressources d'un système, sans qu'elle en connaisse les détails internes. Elle est donc utilisée par les développeurs d'applications et implantée sous une forme concrète sous la forme d'appels système, de fonctions C ou, sous Windows, de DLL (dynamic link libraries). Mais aujourd'hui, le concept d'API s'est généralisé à tout type d'interface logicielle plus ou moins standard : API de système d'exploitation, API pour couches d'accès au réseau, API entre deux entités logicielles distantes, etc.
