Les sens du substantif «appréhension» correspondent généralement à ceux du verbe «appréhender». Les dictionnaires signalent, toutefois, qu'«appréhension» ne s'emploie plus aujourd'hui au sens d'«arrestation», alors qu'«apprehension» en anglais a conservé ce sens. Les juristes ne suivront pas nécessairement cette évolution de l'usage courant en raison de la distinction possible entre «appréhender» et «arrêter» mentionnée ci-dessus, comme l'illustre l'intertitre précédant l'article 94 de la «Loi sur la protection de l'enfance» de l'Ontario : «Appréhension d'adolescents qui s'absentent d'un lieu de garde sans permission».
