The turn of the century is a unique and symbolically compelling moment for the 189 Member States of the United Nations to articulate and affirm an animating vision for the Organization in the new ear. In resolution 53/202 adopted on 17 December 1998, the General Assembly decided to designate its fifty-fifth session "The Millennium Assembly of the United Nations", which opened at the Headquarters of the United Nations in New York in the afternoon of 5 September 2000 (resolution 53/239).
