Un avataq est un flotteur servant à la chasse traditionnelle fait d'une seule peau de phoque. Toutes les parties d'un avataq ont un nom particulier en inuttitut. L'avataq est fermé par des bouchons de bois aux extrémités. Si la peau a des trous, on peut boucher ces trous avec de petits bouchons en ivoire faits sur mesure que l'on appelle «uaqtaq». L'avataq est relié au harpon et à la pointe du harpon par une corde faite également en peau de phoque.
