Nonmetallic element of atomic number 85. Group VIIA of Periodic Table; atomic weight 210. Heaviest member of the halogen family. It has 20 isotopes, all radioactive; derived by alpha bombardment of bismuth. ... Astatine occurs in nature to the extent of about one ounce in entire earth's crust. Like iodine, it concentrates in the thyroid gland. Its use in medicine is still experimental.

L'astate existe en quantités infinitésimales comme produit de désintégration radioactive naturelle de l'uranium. L'astate 211 est obtenu par bombardement d'une cible en bismuth refroidie, par des particules [alpha] de haute énergie. On évapore de la cible l'astate formé à basse pression.

Il semble [que la chimie de l'astate] s'apparente à celle de l'iode [...] On peut considérer ainsi qu'il fait partie de la famille des halogènes dans laquelle il était prévu sous le nom provisoire d'éka-iode. D'autres isotopes sont connus, mais aucun d'eux n'est stable (d'où le nom d'astate [du grec «astatos», qui signifie instable] qui a été donné à ce corps).
