A nonmetallic halogen element of atomic number 35, group VIIA of the Periodic Table.

Atomic weight 79.904. Valences 1, 3, 5 (valence of 7 also reported). There are two stable isotopes. Uses: Manufacture of ethylene dibromide (antiknock gasoline), organic synthesis, bleaching, water purification, solvent, intermediate for fumigants (methyl bromide), analytical reagent, fire-retardant for plastics, dyes, pharmaceuticals, photography, shrink-proofing wool.

Utilisation. Le brome est employé à la fabrication de bromures métalliques, comme le bromure d'argent, utilisé en photographie, et le bromure de potassium, sédatif du système nerveux. Il sert aussi à l'obtention de dérivés organiques bromés, employés comme produits thérapeutiques, substances lacrymogènes, matières colorantes. Le brome est également utilisé sous forme de dibromoéthane dans la préparation du plomb tétraéthyle, qui sert comme antidétonant dans les carburants.

OBS

Le brome est un élément fondamental des halons (bromofluorocarbures) qui sont d'efficaces agents extincteurs d'incendie. Malheureusement, les halons les plus utiles (1211, 1301 et 2402) possèdent un très grand pouvoir de destruction de l'ozone. Le Halon 1301 est aussi un gaz à effet de serre mineur.
