Le cycle de vie d'une cellule [orageuse] dont la durée est d'environ une heure se divise en trois stades définis par la direction (vers le haut ou vers le bas) des mouvements verticaux. Ces stades sont : 1. le stade cumulus caractérisé par des mouvements ascendants; 2. le stade de maturité caractérisé par des mouvements ascendants et descendants; 3. le stade de dissipation caractérisé par des mouvements descendants.
