En 1972, à partir de discussions de travail sur la manière d'améliorer les critères diagnostiques à utiliser dans les recherches, un membre de l'Université Washington, John Feighner, codifie et publie des critères diagnostiques pour quinze troubles mentaux, y compris les troubles de l'humeur primaires et secondaires : c'est ce qu'on appelle les «critères de Feighner». Ceux-ci ne sont pas explicitement destinés à l'usage clinique courant.
