An aircraft radio navigation system that senses and indicates the direction to a LF/MF [low frequency/medium frequency] non-directional beacon (NDB) ground transmitter.

OBS

Direction is indicated to the pilot as a magnetic bearing or as a relative bearing to the longitudinal axis of the aircraft depending on the type of indicator installed in the aircraft. In certain applications, such as military, ADF operations may be based on airborne and ground transmitters in the VHF/UHF [very high frequency/ultra high frequency] spectrum.

Système de radionavigation d'un aéronef qui détecte et indique la direction vers l'émetteur au sol du radiophare non directionnel (NDB) LF/MF [de basses fréquences/moyennes fréquences].

La direction est indiquée au pilote comme un relèvement magnétique ou comme un gisement à l'axe longitudinal de l'aéronef selon le type d'indicateur installé dans l'aéronef. Dans certains cas, notamment celui des forces armées, les opérations ADF peuvent être effectuées à partir d'émetteurs de bord ou au sol qui utilisent les bandes VHF/UHF [onde métrique/onde décimétrique].

radiogoniomètre automatique; ADF : instrument plus moderne que le radiocompas automatique qu'on retrouve dans les gros appareils et les appareils militaires. Contrairement au radiocompas, le radiogoniomètre automatique n'a pas un cadran qui lui est propre mais plutôt un affichage sur un écran cathodique partagé avec d'autres instruments.

radiocompas automatique; ARC : terme et abréviation qui se rapportent à un dispositif qui est plus ancien que le radiogoniomètre automatique d'aujourd'hui, mais qu'on peut encore retrouver dans de petits appareils. Le radiocompas automatique est un instrument qui ne sert qu'à indiquer le gisement et non d'autres informations.
