Un etnónimo es el nombre de un pueblo o una comunidad nacional o regional. Los etnónimos pueden ser autónimos, es decir el nombre que un pueblo usa para referirse a sí mismo (por ejemplo, los habitantes de Costa Rica se llaman a sí mismos costarricenses, o los de la Gran Bretaña con la palabra inglesa British) o exónimos, es decir, el nombre que les dan otros pueblos en su respectivo idioma. Por ejemplo, los habitantes de Alemania se refieren a sí mismos con la palabra alemana Deutsch (autónimo), mientras que los hispanohablantes los llaman alemanes, los anglohablantes Germans, etc. (exónimos).
