GOLPE AGUA [2 records]

Record 1 2020-01-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics (Physics)
  • Pipes and Fittings
DEF

The impact forces reacting on piping or vessels when a flow of liquid is suddenly stopped or some other pressure wave is transmitted through the liquid.

CONT

When the flow of water through fire hose or pipe is suddenly stopped, such as by suddenly closing a nozzle, a shock wave is produced when the moving water reaches the end of the hose and bounces back. The resulting pressure surge is referred to as water hammer.

OBS

water hammer: designation officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee (New Brunswick).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Mécanique des fluides et hydraulique (Physique)
  • Tuyauterie et raccords
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
  • Geomorphology and Geomorphogeny
DEF

The advance of water up the foreshore of a beach or structure, following the breaking of a wave.

CONT

Of the 176 tsunamis recorded in the Pacific Ocean between 1900 and 1970, 35 caused damages near their sources, but only 9 resulted in widespread destruction. Even fewer produced significant runups on British Columbia shores.

Domaine(s)
  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
  • Géomorphologie et géomorphogénie
DEF
