Three different kinds of malfunctions are recognized: 1. Jam or stoppage. Failure to feed, chamber, lock, fire, extract or eject a cartridge or cartridge case due either to faulty ammunition, a dirty or improperly maintained firearm, progressive fouling, insufficiency of gas, an empty magazine or a mechanical failure. 2. Mechanical failure. Failure or breakage of a part causing the firearm to cease firing or fire after releasing the trigger. 3. Complete failure. On en reconnaît trois genres différents : 1. Enrayage. Défaut d'alimentation, d'introduction, de verrouillage, de mise de feu, d'extraction ou d'éjection d'une cartouche ou d'une douille à cause de munitions défectueuses, d'une arme mal entretenue, d'un encrassement progressif, d'une insuffisance de gaz, d'un chargeur vide ou d'une panne mécanique. Aussi appelé «arrêt de tir». 2. Panne mécanique. Usure excessive ou bris d'une pièce qui empêche l'arme de tirer ou qui la fait tirer après le relâchement de la détente. 3. Échec complet.
