A form of learning observed mainly in nidifugous birds such as the anatids and rails, as well as some nidicolous species, and resulting in the establishment of family bonds. LORENZ (1935) a décrit le phénomène de l'empreinte et en définit divers critères qui différencient ce processus d'apprentissage de l'apprentissage associatif conventionnel. Hess (1973) a continué à préciser ces différences. [...] Ce qui est appris par empreinte est non seulement retenu, mais l'objet de l'empreinte est toujours préféré durant tout le reste de la vie de l'animal. L'empreinte est donc «irréversible».
