Les écrans plasma à courant alternatif sont construits sur la même philosophie que ceux à courant continu : l'élément gazeux est pris en sandwich entre deux substrats en verre et les conducteurs sont disposés suivant une structure maillée. Ces derniers sont recouverts d'un diélectrique et d'une couche protectrice. Le couplage avec le gaz est du type capacitif. Le gaz utilisé est un mélange de néon et d'argon dans des proportions identiques à celles utilisées dans les afficheurs plasma à courant continu. Le couplage capacitif permet d'ajouter un effet de mémorisation à l'écran.
