Is dependent on the initial (original or some level agreed as baseline) distribution of the species. Species with very limited natural ranges (which suggests they are a relict population or have very specific habitat requirements) cannot tolerate the percentage reduction in habitat that a widely distributed species can. Small might, therefore, be defined for relict populations as the majority of existing range or, for species with large populations and wide distribution, a lower percentage of the historical population distribution.

Le sens dépend de la répartition initiale (historique ou définie comme condition de référence) de l'espèce. Une espèce dont l'aire naturelle est très limitée (laissant penser qu'il s'agit d'une population relique ou ayant des besoins très particuliers en matière d'habitat) ne peut pas supporter un même pourcentage de réduction de son habitat qu'une espèce largement disséminée. Par conséquent, une fraction modeste peut correspondre à la majorité de l'aire existante, dans le cas d'une population relique, et à un pourcentage moindre de l'aire historique, dans le cas d'une espèce très répandue et possédant de grosses populations.

El sentido depende de la distribución inicial (histórica o definida como condición de referencia) de la especie. Una especie cuya distribución natural es muy limitada (al punto de que hace pensar que se trata de una población relicto o con requerimientos de hábitat muy particulares) no puede tolerar el mismo porcentaje de reducción de su hábitat que una especie de distribución amplia. Por lo tanto, una "pequeña parte" puede corresponder a la mayor parte del área de distribución existente en el caso de una población relicto, y a un porcentaje menor del área histórica de distribución, en el caso de una especie que posee amplia distribución y grandes poblaciones.
