Applied to a texture of rocks in which the crystalline are too small to be distinguished with the unaided eye.

CONT

Aphanitic material may be minutely crystalline, or it may be glassy. Most lavas solidify so rapidly that coarse mineral grains cannot form; thus, volcanic rocks are mostly aphanites.

Les roches sont dites cristallines si les cristaux peuvent être distingués à l'œil nu. Dans le cas contraire, on les dit aphanitiques. [...] Les roches aphanitiques peuvent être microcristallines ou cryptocristallines suivant que les divers constituants peuvent ou non être distingués au microscope. Si la substance vitreuse est prédominante, les roches sont appelées simplement aphanitiques et, en particulier, si elles sont riches en composants acides, ce sont des felsites.

On parle aussi de la pâte aphanitique des roches éruptives, microlitiques et parfois même microgrenues.
