The past September in Winnipeg, over 1000 participants attended the International Conference on War-Affected Children, the largest-ever gathering on the issue. They included government officials, experts, academics, NGO representatives and youth-all wanting their discussions to make a difference. The result was a 14-point Agenda for War-Affected Children adopted by the Conference. This urges "political, moral, economic and social leadership" to protect the rights of children in conflict.

En septembre dernier, à Winnipeg, plus de 1 000 personnes ont participé à la Conférence internationale sur les enfants touchés par la guerre, le plus grand rassemblement jamais organisé sur cette question. Parmi les participants figuraient des représentants de gouvernements, des experts, des universitaires, des représentants d'organisation non gouvernementales de même que des jeunes, et tous espéraient que leurs discussions feraient avancer les choses. L'issue de la COnférence a été l'adoption du Programme pour les enfants touchés par la guerre. Celui-ci recommande en 14 points un plus grand «leadership sur les plans politique, moral, économique et social» afin de protéger les droits des enfants en situation de conflit.

Electronic Journal of the Office of the International Information Programs (IIP), Department of State, United States. IIP publishes five electronic journals (Economic Perspectives, U.S. Foreign Policy Agenda, U.S. Society & Values, Global Issues, and Issues of Democracy) on an irregular, rotating cycle, with a new journal appearing every three weeks; translations of all or some of these journals into Arabic, French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian appear from one to several weeks after the English. Hypertext versions of the journals appear on our web site in English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian.

The objective of the Conference was to "bring together the understanding and judgment of the world scientific community on the issues of highest priority for the future of the environment and development," and the Conference outcome "was to provide both a consolidated contribution to the Rio Conference and a perspective for the future of international science in these and related areas." This agenda discusses problems of the environment and development (such as population and natural resource use; agriculture, land use and degradation; industry and waste; energy; health) as well as scientific understanding of the earth system (for instance, global cycles; atmosphere and climate; marine and coastal systems; terrestrial systems; freshwater resources; biodiversity).
