Los procesos de globalización dieron lugar a la emergencia de un movimiento social heterogéneo desde el punto de vista social, generacional, ideológico y geográfico, conformado por grupos de organizaciones no gubernamentales, sindicatos, ecologistas y anticapitalistas, que se conoció con el nombre de "movimiento antiglobalización" en el sentido que rechazaba de plano a los fenómenos actuales de globalización.
