An "unexpected missing factor" may have surfaced in 1976 when the presence of trace levels of chlorine nitrate were detected in the stratosphere. Hydrogen chloride and inorganic chlorides are introduced into the troposphere by volcanic emissions, by seaspray evaporation and by human activity. Removal of these compounds by rain is so rapid that their concentrations decrease rapidly with altitude. Molecular chlorine (Cl2) escaping from industrial processes is also rapidly removed by chemical processes in the atmosphere.

Susan Solomon reported that the NOAA team's UV spectrophotometer found nitrogen dioxide levels inside the ozone hole that are the lowest the group has observed anywhere in the world, which would support the chlorine theories. The JPL team's infrared measurements of nitric acid have yet to be analyzed. But the concentrations of one active chlorine species seem low, and another high.

Molecule that captures and retains chlorine for a time.

CONT

A chlorine atom or a chlorine monoxide radical combines with another molecule to form a stable product that temporarily acts as a chlorine "reservoir" ; when chlorine is thus engaged (as it is most of the time in the normal atmosphere), it is unavailable to attack ozone. Two important reservoirs are chlorine nitrate (C1ONO2), formed by the combination of chlorine monoxide and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and hydrochloric acid (HC1), formed from a chlorine atome and methane (CH4).

Natural chlorine makes only a minor (few percent) contribution to ozone destruction, but the chlorine included in man-made chlorofluoromethanes released into the atmosphere may have a serious effect.

Natural: not to be confused with "biogenic" (produced by living organisms). A volcano for example is a natural source but not a biogenic source.
