Le mouvement de l'air turbulent se manifeste sous forme de poussées momentanées et rapides qui peuvent présenter une orientation absolument quelconque. Parmi celles-ci, on peut distinguer : les rafales qui ne concernent que les variations de la vitesse horizontale du vent, sans modification de direction; les mouvements verticaux qui englobent tous les courants aériens ascendants ou descendants.

OBS

Le terme «rabattant» semble employé par les pilotes pour décrire le phénomène de courant descendant lors du survol des régions montagneuses. Cependant, cette particularité n'est consignée dans aucune source. De plus, le terme «rabattant» est un terme de jargon.

CONT

On a attribué longtemps la turbulence à la présence de «trous d'air», en fait il n'y a pas de «trous» dans l'air, la turbulence est généralement due à des déflections vers le haut ou vers le bas du vent horizontal.

OBS

Le terme «trou d'air» n'est pas qualifié de terme vieilli dans les dictionnaires contrairement à son équivalent anglais «air pocket».

Les termes «courant descendant», «rabattant» et «trou d'air» ont été uniformisés par le Comité d'uniformisation de la terminologie aéronautique (CUTA) - Opérations aériennes.
