This document of title is legally valid provided it acknowledges receipt of the goods on board of the first carrier with an undertaking that carriage will be made to their final destination and that one carrier, usually a maritime carrier, is responsible for the whole transport through successive carriers.

Tandis que l'usage du terme «through bill of lading» persiste dans les milieux anglophones de l'industrie des transports, dans la francophonie, l'usage du terme «connaissement direct» diminue au fur et à mesure que ce document est remplacé par un nouveau titre de transport appelé «document de transport combiné» dont la Chambre de Commerce internationale (CCI) recommande l'emploi depuis 1975, parce que ce dernier est juridiquement plus fiable que le connaissement direct. Cependant, leur nature diffère. Il ne faut pas les confondre. En anglais, la CCI a créé l'instrument désigné : «combined transport document» qu'il ne faut pas confondre avec le «through bill of lading» moins spécifique et moins efficace.

El caso más frecuente es el de una mercancía cargada primero en ferrocarril y luego en barco. Es, de este modo, una combinación de la carta de porte y del conocimiento de embarque.

En Estados Unidos puede ser formalizado en la estación de salida, al recibirse el aviso del agente marítimo, informando que la mercancía está cargada en el barco. A veces se abrevia con estas siglas Thru B/L.

Debido a que la fábrica está ubicada cerca de los servicios de transporte, todas las unidades del bien terminado se almacenan en una bodega que se encuentra a 200 metros del final de la línea de producción. Los bienes son embarcados a diferentes partes del mundo desde esta bodega. El punto de embarque directo es la bodega.
