A white to yellow, gray, brown, or greenish mineral of the calcite group, which consists of a carbonate of zinc occurring in reniform, botryoidal, stalactitic, or granular, crystals; an ore of zinc.

The International Mineralogical Association ... have defined calamine as the silicate of zinc. However, in practice, calamine may refer to either the silicate [hemimorphite], the carbonate [smithsonite] or both.

Minéral (carbonate) du système cristallin rhomboédrique, blanc à l'état pur, se présentant en cristaux ou en masses terreuses.

Smithsonite.- Presque jamais cristallisée, toujours en amas granuleux ou mamelés, souvent aussi en formations encroûtantes. On peut trouver des cristaux dans les géodes, ils sont toujours mal formés [...] Opaque, de couleur blanche ou grise, quelquefois brun [...] d = 4,5 [...] Indice très élevé, il variera de 1,62 à 1,85. L'éclat est adamantin. C'est un minéral de la zone d'oxydation des gîtes de Zn, associé à la calamine et l'hydrozincite.

Carbonato de cinc [...] que cristaliza en el sistema romboédrico; suele encontrarse asociado a la blenda en forma de masas fibrosas, concrecionadas, generalmente pardas, a veces grisáceas o verdosas, que constituyen una importante mena de cinc.

OBS

Suele dársele [a la esmitsonita] impropiamente, el nombre de calamina. En mineralogía se da el nombre de calamina al silicato de cinc, que es un mineral raro, mientras que la calamina de los geólogos y mineros es el carbonato de cinc, producido por una alteración de blenda, que se beneficia como mena del referido metal y cuyo nombre es esmitsonita o smithsonita.
