Una de las instituciones creadas en Bretton Woods en 1944. Es el organismo de las Naciones Unidas para la cooperación monetaria y el comercio internacional. Se basó en un sistema de patrón de cambios-oro, en el cual todas las monedas de los socios debían ser convertibles al dólar, siéndolo éste a su vez al oro a un precio fijo. Entre 1948 y 1973 el FMI aseguró la estabilidad de los tipos de cambio, hasta que los cambios flotantes se generalizaron tras la segunda devaluación del dólar (1973). El FMI, que tiene su sede en Washington, facilita recursos en forma de créditos automáticos (girando cada país sobre su propia cuota), créditos stand-by, etc., a sus socios, para hacer frente a sus dificultades monetarias.
