Il y a deux grandes catégories de granites. La première est celle des vastes granites diffus qui imprègnent d'immenses compartiments de l'écorce terrestre profonde. Ils ne constituent pas des masses homogènes, mais ils se mêlent intimement, sur une grande partie de leur extension, à la substance des roches préexistantes, la pénètrent, s'y insinuent de toutes les façons, la modifient sans la détruire ou l'effacent plus ou moins çà et là. Ces granites diffus paraissent le résultat d'une fusion partielle de ces compartiments profonds.
