Les hydrocarbures halogénés comprennent les halométhanes, qui n'ont qu'un seul atome de carbone, et les haloéthanes, qui ont deux atomes de carbone. Contrairement aux composés chlorofluorocarbonés, qui ne contiennent que deux halogènes, le chlore et le fluor, les hydrocarbures halogénés peuvent contenir tous les autres halogènes : brome, iode et astate; cependant ces derniers éléments sont rarement utilisés et c'est pour cette raison qu'on emploie parfois le terme chlorofluorocarbone au sens d'hydrocarbure halogéné.

OBS

L'ordre de préséance des termes français devrait être : «hydrocarbure halogéné», «halocarbone» et «halocarbure». Le terme «hydrocarbure halogéné» remplace fort bien le terme «halocarbure» pour traduire le mot anglais «halocarbon». Le terme «halocarbone» qui est meilleur que le terme «halocarbure» est cependant d'usage peu fréquent. Le terme «halocarbure» quoique de forme discutable peut être employé dans un contexte de continuité, particulièrement si le nom était généralement accepté et utilisé antérieurement (par ex. dans un règlement fédéral).

Several halogenated organic compounds are important in biological chemistry but only very few such as thyroxine (thyroid hormone) are formed naturally.

Organic compounds such as pesticides, PCBs, PAHs, organohalogens and mineral hydrocarbons are most often adsorbed to particles or organic matter, a physical condition often caused by the very low water solubility and weak polarity of organic compounds.

The chemical agents implicated in the ozone depletion phenomena are the halogenated compounds known as "halocarbons." Though stable in the lower atmosphere, scientists believe they become unstable in sunlight in the atmosphere, and react with ozone, forming new compounds, thereby depleting the ozone available for screening.

Measurements of concentration trends and sensitivity studies by means of radiation models have resolved that the strongest climatic change signals are to be expected from CFCl3 (F 11), FC2Cl[subscript 2 (F 12), CH4, N2O and O3. A number of other halogenated compounds and hydrocarbons altogether probably are less important than any one of the above mentioned constituents and will not be considered specifically in the present context.
