Bioidentical hormones are defined as man-made hormones that are very similar to the hormones produced by the human body. Common hormones that are matched are estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. These are then used as treatment for men and women whose own hormones are low or out of balance.

Les inquiétudes concernant les traitements hormonaux standards ont augmenté l'intérêt porté aux hormones obtenues à partir de plantes telles que l'igname et le soja. Ces hormones présentent pratiquement la même structure moléculaire que les hormones produites par l'organisme et sont donc appelées hormones bio-identiques. De nombreuses hormones utilisées dans le cadre des traitements hormonaux standards sont également des hormones dites bio-identiques dérivées des plantes.
