Many dairy producers use the hormone, but the practice is controversial because the use of bST may increase the incidence of mastitis (udder infection) in cows, and the long-term human health effects of the slightly increased hormone levels in the milk from treated cows have not been established.

Les améliorateurs de performance issus de la biotechnologie sont administrés aux animaux ou aux poissons par l'alimentation, de manière régulière ou par période pour stimuler leur productivité et/ou améliorer leur rapport viande/graisse. La somatotropine bovine (BST) ou hormone de croissance bovine est un de ces améliorateurs de performance. Il s'agit d'une protéine hormonale hypophysaire qui stimule non seulement la croissance osseuse et l'anabolisme protéique, mais aussi la galactopoïèse (augmentation de la sécrétion lactée au cours d'une lactation établie chez les bovins). De nos jours, la BST peut être produite par génie génétique à l'échelle industrielle.

In the first case, the suffix "trophic", means: of, relating to, or characterized by a specified kind of nutrition. In the second case, it means acting on something specified. Moreover, the prefix "tropic", from Grec origin, meaning a turning, in English means: affecting or attracted to something specified.
