Nous avons trouvé la définition suivante de charbon bitumineux dans Le Grand dictionnaire encyclopédique Larousse (source LAROG, vol. 2, p. 1274) : «Charbon gras souvent cokéfiable donnant un pourcentage important de goudron à la distillation.» Toutefois, à la lumière de l'observation faite dans le Dictionnaire de géologie, par Alain Foucault et J.-F Raoult (source FOUGE) et reproduite dans le premier contexte cité ci-dessus, nous gardons des réserves à l'égard de ce terme.
