Three different kinds of malfunctions are recognized: 1. Jam or stoppage. Failure to feed, chamber, lock, fire, extract or eject a cartridge or cartridge case due either to faulty ammunition, a dirty or improperly maintained firearm, progressive fouling, insufficiency of gas, an empty magazine or a mechanical failure. 2.
