Les microbes rencontrent une première barrière spécifique de défense, au contact de l'appareil respiratoire, de l'intestin et des muqueuses génitales, indépendante des anticorps sériques ou de l'action directe des cellules T. Cette immunité est liée à la présence locale d'IgA. Elle joue un rôle primordial vis-à-vis de nombreuses infections. L'IgA est l'immunoglobuline prédominante dans les produits sécrétoires tels que la salive, les larmes, le lait, les sécrétions gastro-intestinales et dans les tissus en continuité avec l'environnement externe.
