LITOSFERA [3 records]

Record 1 2011-05-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plate Tectonics
DEF

The Earth's crust and a portion of the upper mantle, which together constitute a layer of strength, relative to the more easily deformable asthenosphere below.

CONT

The lithosphere ranges in thickness from 60 to 150 km (40 to 95 mi). It is thickest under the continents and thinnest under the ocean basins.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Tectonique des plaques
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Titles of International Programs
  • Plate Tectonics
OBS

The International Lithosphere Program (ILP) - instituted in 1980 as the successor to the International Geodynamic Project - seeks to elucidate the nature, dynamics, origin and evolution of the lithosphere with special attention to the continents and their margins. Believing these goals are best attained through international, interdisciplinary collaboration, the Inter-Union Commission on the Lithosphere has established international, multidisciplinary working group and coordinating committees to pursue its specific research objectives.
