L'observation nivométéorologique est une spécialisation d'une autre activité professionnelle de montagne. Elle ne constitue donc pas un métier à proprement parler. L'observateur relève un certain nombre de paramètres liés à la neige et à la météorologie, deux fois par jour du 1er décembre au 30 avril de chaque année. Il transmet ses relevés au centre de la Météorologie de son département qui va les utiliser pour élaborer une prévision du risque d'avalanche.
