An ocean-bottom sampler that is a metal or plastic cylinder or box, lowered by cable and driven into the ocean floor by impact of attached weights.

OBS

Currently, sediment samples are obtained by samplers that gather deposits from the top few centimeters and by corers that penetrate the sea floor for centimeters to meters and extract the material for analysis.

Composé d'un tube (destiné à recevoir la carotte) qui entraîne une couronne à lames ou à rouleaux (destinée à attaquer le terrain), le carottier est fixé à l'extrémité du train de tiges de forage à la place du trépan; sa rotation permet de découper la quantité voulue de l'échantillon, qui peut atteindre plusieurs mètres, et un système de retenue situé à sa base permet de remonter la carotte.
