Suele tener un perfil ligeramente cóncavo y su pendiente es moderada: de 4 a 6 por ciento, aunque localmente puede ser mucho mayor. Por lo general, su superficie es bastante más lisa que la de las vertientes de las montañas, lo cual no excluye la presencia de terrazas; también, en ciertas partes, se encuentra entallado por cañones submarinos.

[...] On protège le plus souvent les talus contre l'érosion par des plantations d'arbres, d'arbustes et de gazon ou par des fascinages. [...] Si l'on désire réaliser des talus voisins de 60°, on doit transformer le talus en perré par un revêtement de pierres sèches ou jointoyées ou de dalles de béton.
