The average lifetime of an atomic or nuclear system in a specified state. For an exponentially decaying system, it is the average time for the number of atoms or nuclei in a specified state to decrease by a factor of e. [Definition standardized by ISO.]

[For a radionuclide, it is] the average time for which the unstable nuclei of a radioisotope exist before decaying. It is the reciprocal of the decay constant and is equal to T1/2/0.693 15, where T1/2 is the "half-life" [q.v.].
