Contrairement au thyristor qui ne peut conduire que dans un sens, le triac peut conduire dans les deux sens. Il est bidirectionnel, alors que le thyristor est unidirectionnel. Le triac est apparu en 1964 et doit son nom à l'abréviation (Triode Alternating Current). Le triac se commande aussi à l'aide d'une gâchette.
